In the first years of video games, sports arcades populated the catalog. However, when the seventh generation of consoles arrived, they practically disappeared. Since then, AAA developments such as FIFA or Madden cover the annual share of sports games every year.
“But I don’t like those sports games!” you might say. Easy, as we discussed in a previous post, sports games can come in various flavours. The big difference between them is if they focus on simulation or arcade experiences.
In Unfinished Pixel we advocate for “Why settle for realism?” The best thing about video games is that they can offer us incredible experiences and alternatives to reality. Therefore, we have collected the best indie sports games that break the rules and the laws of physics.
Mutant Football League
Our first choice is for the spiritual successor of Electronic Art’s Mutant League Football. As the classic game released in Sega Genesis, it’s packed with undeads, monsters and big explosions. Like an over-the-top version of NFL Blitz, it takes American football rules and smash them with some “Dirty Tricks” like bribing the referee or shredding your enemies in tiny pieces with chainsaws, to name a few.
It’s not an ordinary football game and a blast from the past full of great diversion, blood and broken bones.
Super Mega Baseball 2
After being unanimously acclaimed by both players and critics, the guys of Metalhead Software have come back with a new fine-tuned baseball game for fans and newcomers to this sport.
Although the game may not have the most realistic presentation, it’s caricaturistic graphics combined with its well-developed physics and accessible controls break the mold of sports games. An appealing game for everybody, no matter if you are an experienced player or not. Specially in it’s multiplayer modes.
Super Blood Hockey
Remember Ice Hockey and Blades of Steel? Loren Lemcke released this game a few months ago. If you love hockey and the most visceral and bloody part of it, Super Blood Hockey is for you.
Fast paced, atmospheric, violent and retro. Do you need anything else? Super Blood Hockey will keep you entertained with its simple gameplay and great sense of humor, even if you are not a fan of the sport. If you want to bring back nice nostalgic memories with new own ideas, you should this game.
Lonely Mountains Downhill
If you are looking for a serene and pretty aesthetic game, maybe Lonely Mountains: Downhill will be your best option.
With its retro style and simplicity, the game offers a relaxing challenge inviting us to take a bike and going on route through different environments. The terrain is a blast to explore and the atmosphere is very relaxing thanks to the open feeling of carving your own route down the mountains.
Since its debut on Kickstarter, the game has showed its greatness. Not only by its retro roots, but also on how the guys of Megagon Industries poured a great gameplay despite the technical limitations. Lonely Mountains Downhill is easily the best mountain biking game available.
If you haven’t heard something about this game, you probably have been living under a rock. Rocket League is about rocket-powered cards knocking a giant ball into a goal like soccer. This ridiculous proposition is a great reminder that the simplest ideas can be the most fun.
Each match is about five minutes long and it’s simplest controls make it perfect to be played with a group of friends. It arrived in July 2015, but the road that Psyonix started took a long way. The game serves as a refined sequel of another game called ‘Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars’, released in 2008.
The best of arcade indie sports games
Definitely indie arcade-style sports games, with their accessible and moment-to moment gameplay, can remind us why we fell in love with both video game and sports. That feeling of going faster than your own thoughts and performing action instantly, but also the friendly and heated competition with friends. And that’s what we are trying to achieve with Super Volley Blast and Super Tennis Blast.
We’ll keep updating this post with more sports games from indie developers that keep vigorating the genre and reinventing it. If you know any other games on the list, don’t be shy and share them with us on Twitter!
